RIA: German Gewehr 41(M) « Forgotten Weapons

They had reliability problems, but I almost bought one in the 90's, wish I would have, the prices have gone through the roof.........

  1. Buying one in the 90's would have been a good investment from a financial standpoint. I did buy an all matching Gewehr 43 AC 44 (Walther) with an original Ajax scope (the mount was a reproduction. I had always wanted one and had known this gun for years. While it was great piece of history, affordable to shoot, and very accurate, I really didn't care for it. It was gawky and more cumbersome than I would have imagined. The scoped G-43 was intended to given to the better shots of zugs (platoons) but not necessarily for snipers. The design was a facsimile of the Russian Takorev SVT 40. I paid $1,700.00 for it back then and have long since sold it. Now, they are through the roof with a bare rifle alone fetching three thousand and up. Now and again, one can still find a bargain. I passed on a very nice "sportorized" one three months ago for $1,300.00. Ever since "Band of Brothers" and "Saving Private Ryan" came out prices of WWII militaria and particularly WWII firearms have skyrocketed as you well know. I wish I had of bought lots of things back int the day when it was inexpensive. Thanks for sharing.

    2. Yes, I too remember the bargain days SKS rifles. I paid two grand for a transferable MP40 in 1994 and thought I was crazy. I still have it. I passed on a MG42 in 1997 priced at $4.500.00. The guy selling it had two extra complete parts sets, the original tripod and optics, ten barrels, eight drums, numerous ammo cans, belts, linker, and six thousand rounds of 8MM. I was thinking at the time it was a pretty good deal, but all I would do is bring it home, lock it in the safe and take it out and feed it five or six times a year. Talk about the "one that got away"!
